Rob Morgan

President & Chief Executive Officer

Strathcona Resources Ltd.

Rob is a Professional Engineer with more than 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, largely focused on heavy oil and Montney development. In addition to his previous roles as Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cona Resources, Rob has extensive senior management experience including six years as Chief Operating Officer at Crew Energy Inc. and various executive positions with Harvest Operations Corporation, Viking Energy Trust and Petrovera Resources Ltd.

Rob holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. He also sits on the Board of Directors for Explorers and Producers Association of Canada and is a member of the Alberta Security Commission’s Petroleum Advisory Committee.

This breakfast presentation will focus on recent merger and acquisition trends in the upstream Canadian oil and natural gas Industry with an emphasis on the prices being paid, who the buyers and sellers are, and what factors have impacted recent M&A activity. 

 

Ben Rye, P.Geo.
Vice-President 

Ben joined Sayer in the fall of 2012 after obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan. While pursuing his degree, Ben gained technical experience in geology through his involvement in several conventional and heavy oil resource plays for a number of exploration & production companies. Ben was promoted to Vice-President of Sayer in the spring of 2022 after spending the prior three years as Manager, Geology & Business Development with increasing responsibilities, playing an instrumental role in expanding the corporate advisory focus of Sayer. 

Ben is registered as a Professional Geologist with APEGA. His main roles at Sayer include business development, technical and financial duties. He also provides analysis on Sayer’s four oil industry publications, ensuring that he is up to date on M&A and financing trends in the Canadian Oil & Natural Gas industry.

 The Cashflow Allocation Dilemma - The Investors Perspective on Shareholder Returns, Growth, and M&A

We are pleased to announce that the December PADA breakfast will be a fireside chat discussion with three well-known Canadian Energy Investors. Randy Ollenberger from BMO Capital Markets will moderate a discussion that will explore how fund managers are thinking about how producers are allocating the significant amount of cashflow being generated today and tomorrow.

Randy Ollenberger

Randy leads BMO Capital Markets’ coverage of the North American oil and gas industry, covering the Canadian integrateds, large cap oil & gas producers and oil sands companies. Randy has been voted #1 in large-cap oil & gas coverage in 12 of the last 14 years in the Brendan Wood International survey and has been a highly ranked analyst since 2001. Prior to joining the brokerage business in 1996, Randy worked in the oil and gas industry in Calgary for nine years with PanCanadian Petroleum, the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). He has testified as a policy and expert witness before the National Energy Board (NEB), Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (AEUB), and U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Randy holds a B.A. in economics and an M.A. in economics from the University of Saskatchewan.

Jennifer Stevenson

Jennifer Stevenson is a Vice-President and Portfolio Manager focused on the global energy industry with 1832 Asset Management.  Jennifer has extensive energy industry experience and has been active in the sector for nearly three decades, closely following industry trends and the innovations shaping the future of the industry. She takes an unconstrained approach to investing in the sector, investing in quality companies providing the world's energy needs today and the emerging market leaders delivering the technologies enabling the transition towards a zero carbon future. By expanding the investment universe beyond the index, she is able to take advantage of the inherent complexity of the sector to invest in the various segments of the global energy supply chain and benefit from niche events and pricing spreads.

Victor Swishchuk

Victor Swishchuk is a portfolio manager at Letko Brosseau & Associates, a global investment manager based in Montreal. Mr. Swishchuk joined the firm in 2013 and has been the specialist on the Energy, Utilities and Renewables sectors. Prior to his current role, Mr. Swishchuk was a VP on the money market desk at a leading Canadian bank. Mr. Swishchuk holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and is a CFA charterholder.    

Rafi Tahmazian

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Rafi Tahmazian has deep roots in Canada’s energy community. He has more than 31 years of oil and gas, energy banking and investment management experience.  He was a founder, and is Director and Senior Portfolio Manager at Canoe Financial, one of Canada’s fastest growing independent mutual fund companies managing $12 billion in assets across a diversified range of award-winning mutual funds, private energy equity products and institutional mandates.  Previously, Rafi spent 13 years at First Energy Capital, a leading investment dealer focused on the energy industry.  He left the firm in 2008 as Vice Chairman and Managing Director.  Prior to First Energy, he worked in the oil and gas industry. Rafi is currently a Director on the Boards of Canoe Financial LP, Alberta Teachers Retirement Fund, Artis Exploration Ltd., Aureus Energy Services Inc., Chance Oil and Gas Ltd., and Well Ventures Corp. Rafi graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts (Economics).

Martin

Martin “Marty” King has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Calgary. His work experience spans being an Economist at the Bank of Canada in Ottawa from 1990 to 1993, and at the National Energy Board in Calgary from 1993 to 1997. From 1997 to 2018 he was with FirstEnergy Capital Corp., later GMP FirstEnergy, in Calgary, where he eventually served as Director of Institutional Research and was responsible for the analysis, modeling and price forecasts of the crude oil and natural gas markets. He is currently a senior analyst with RBN Energy LLC, a Houston-based energy consultancy.

Headwinds in Every Direction - Government Relations for Oil & Gas in 2023

Featuring Guest Speaker: Tim Moro, Vice President, Hill + Knowlton Strategies 

 

About the Speaker:

Tim has more than 30 years of business experience, working extensively government relations, communications and market research.  The challenges and opportunities of the energy sector have been the primary focus of his career.  Tim has worked for energy industry players across Canada and the United States and continues this focus at Hill + Knowlton Strategies taking on assignments for clients in the oil and gas, pipeline and electricity sectors.  

Tim’s agency experience includes being Managing Partner at Cohn & Wolfe, Senior Vice President at Ipsos and Vice President at the Angus Reid Group.  Tim’s clients in these roles cover the full spectrum of the energy sector including conventional and renewable electricity generation companies, electricity transmission and distribution companies, electricity retailers, natural gas utilities, upstream and downstream oil and gas companies, pipeline transportation companies, energy industry associations, industry regulators and government energy departments.  Before moving to roles with consulting firms, Tim worked for the Government of Canada and at TransAlta.

Tim holds a BA (first class) from the University of Victoria and a MA in Political Science from the University of Calgary.  His academic background includes studies in economics, psychology and sociology. 

Tim frequently lends his experience to non-profits and is currently on the Board of Calgary Counselling Centre and recently ended completed terms on the Board of Discovery House (7 years) and the Public and Government Affairs Strategic Advisory Committee of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce (5 years).
